How to Find the Air Filter Size You Need

There are two important things you need to know when you are searching for a new air filter. You will want to get the correct MERV rating along with the correct size for your home’s air filter. Learn how to find the air filter size you need ahead.

Look for the Printed Dimensions

The first thing you should do is turn off your air conditioning system and remove the filter that is currently being used. Once you have pulled the filter out, check for the printed dimensions on the filter itself. This is the easiest way to find the dimensions, but there’s a chance they might not be printed on them. If this is the case, check if you have the packaging it came in or move to the next step.

Measure the Filter

The next way you can find the air filter size is by measuring it yourself. Before you measure your old filter, know that there are three measurements you need to record: the length, width, and depth. Keep the numbers in this order as well, since that is how they are typically listed.

Measure the Opening

If you don’t have an air filter already in your home’s unit, then you will want to measure the opening. To do this, look inside where the filter would normally go. Measure the duct opening’s height and width. Also, be sure to measure the depth of the opening to the best of your ability. Leave yourself a little bit of room for overlap and begin your search online. This might be a more difficult step to follow, so you might want to try this final option.

Refer to the Product Manual

Your air conditioning unit should also come with a product manual. In the manual, you can typically find what size of air filter works best for the unit. If this isn’t the case, then we recommend you contact the manufacturer who can help guide you to toward the right sized filter.

Knowing how to find the air filter size you need is essential to ensure that your home’s air quality is high. After finding out which size your air filter is, visit Remember the Filter for an AC filter at 20x20x1, at 12x24x1, or filters at various other sizes and MERV ratings.
