Is Your Air Filter Working? Check Using the White Sheet Test

It’s safe to say that your air filter plays a pivotal role in maintaining your health and well-being. If you notice unexplained symptoms like headaches, irritation of your eyes and sinuses, and fatigue, it’s best to cover your bases. Is your air filter working? Check using the white sheet test!

What Is the White Sheet Test?

Determining whether your air filter benefits your HVAC system can be a challenge. Most air pollutants are microscopic particles unseen to the eye, making it easy for them to float until finding their way into your airways and lungs.

Fortunately, all you need to test your filter’s efficiency is a clean white sheet and the help of your air vent.

Test Instructions

Once you have your material, hang the sheet approximately five inches away from the vent. Leave the sheet hanging for about an hour; you’ll notice particles accumulating on the fabric.

Analyzing Your Results

After an hour, remove the sheet and analyze your results. The outcome of this assessment is relatively evident; if the sheet is still white after its time in front of the vent, your air filter is working!

On the other hand, if the material is gray, it means particles, spores, and other pollutants are making their way into your vents and circulating within your property. The grayer the sheet, the more clogged your air filter is.

A clogged air filter is often the source of indoor air quality concerns. On the bright side, you can check if your air filter is working using the white sheet test, determining whether it’s time for a switch.
