Common Misconceptions About Air Filters

An air filter is well known by many for being an important piece of home maintenance that you must keep up with. If you are a new homeowner or have been told otherwise, you might have reservations about whether an air filter is something that you should pay attention to. Learn the truth as we address these common misconceptions about air filters with the following myths.

Myth #1: All Air Filters Are the Same

The first myth you need to get out of your head right now is that air filters are all the same. This is far from the case, as there are air filters that come in different types, sizes, and MERV ratings. The type of air filter you get is also crucial to ensuring that it’s effective in your home, so make sure you choose the right one for your HVAC unit.

Myth #2: The Purpose Is To Get Rid of Dust

An air filter’s purpose goes far beyond keeping dust off equipment. Having an air filter is instrumental to keeping up with the air quality. Removing dust is just touching the surface in terms of what an air filter can accomplish because it can also remove allergens, dirt, pet dander, and other harmful particles.

Myth #3: You Don't Need To Replace Them Often

The third common misconception about air filters has to do with how often you need to replace them. Some say you only must replace an air filter every three months or when the seasons change. In reality, you should replace basic air filters every 30 days and pleated air filters every 90 days.

Myth #4: Your HVAC Unit Doesn’t Need an Air Filter

Some people also believe that an AC filter is just a gimmick and your HVAC unit doesn’t even need one. However, several complications can arise if you don’t have an air filter in your HVAC unit, such as:

  • Poor air quality
  • Higher expenses
  • Frozen AC unit
  • Ductwork issues

Based on these issues alone, it’s probably best for an HVAC unit to not only have an air filter but to also have one that isn’t worn down.
