How to Properly Clean an AC Filter

The filter is one of the most important parts of your home’s air conditioning unit. The filter is responsible for keeping various particles like allergens, dirt, and more from getting into your home’s air. One way you can prolong the use of your AC filter is by performing the proper maintenance on it—this, of course, means cleaning your filter. Learn how to properly clean an AC filter without damaging it ahead.

Vacuum

The first option on our guide for how to properly clean an AC filter is to use a vacuum. Before you begin, you will want to unplug and turn off your HVAC unit. Then, remove the filter from the unit see what condition the filter is in. If there is minimal buildup, use a vacuum hose to remove it.

Wash with Water and Vinegar

If you are having issues with removing the buildup with a vacuum, then you should go one step further and wash it. To wash an AC filter, you will need water and white vinegar. You can either do this in a kitchen sink or use a garden hose or with a spray bottle filled with the water and vinegar solution. If you use a hose, make sure you spray the filter lightly to prevent any damage. Let the filter soak in the solution for an hour, then let it air dry afterward.

Replace the Filter

Vacuuming and washing are two impactful options to properly clean an AC filter. However, AC filters naturally get worn down over time, which means you may have to get it replaced. The best way to know is to check your filters regularly. If you notice any damage to your filter after a few months, then it’s a sign that you need to get it replaced. Remember the Filter has a large collection of washable AC filters for you when the time comes.
