Understanding What a Furnace Filter Does

There’s a lot of home maintenance you need to keep up with to prevent issues that may not only be costly to repair, but also put your health in danger. A key part of a home is a furnace, which is necessary to keep your home warm in the winter. Read this guide on understanding what a furnace filter does so that you can keep up with an important part of home maintenance.

Protection

The main purpose of a furnace filter is to protect your home’s blower fan from a variety of different particles, such as:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Mold spores
  • Dust mites

Without a furnace filter, your run the risk of damaging your home’s HVAC system. A furnace filter also plays a large role in improving the air quality in your home. Furthermore, you must keep up on maintenance by periodically replacing your filters.

Location

Your home’s furnace is typically located by your washer and dryer in the following areas:

  • Basement
  • Garage
  • Attic
  • Crawl space
  • Utility closet

A furnace filter will be located inside the blower compartment, which you can access via a bottom door. Check your filter every so often by pulling it out and seeing how much is covered up by various particles. If it’s very dirty, you’ll need to replace it with a clean filter.

Rating

One thing you’ll want to look out for when you’re looking for a furnace filter is its MERV rating. MERV stands for Minimal Efficiency Reporting Value, and it lets you know how many particles the filter can trap. The higher the rating, the smaller the particles it will be able to filter out.

If you find you’re in need of new filters, turn to Remember the Filter. We offer NaturalAire furnace filters, EZ-Green filters, and many other brands of furnace filters in a variety of different sizes and MERV ratings.
