Which Way Does the Arrow Go on a Furnace Filter?

By now, you’re likely aware of the importance of switching your HVAC furnace filter. While the task seems simple at first glance, its simplicity can fool you into thinking that replacements are a single-step project.

However, it’s worth noting that there are correct and incorrect ways to insert an HVAC filter. An improperly installed filter can cost you money in the long run and have other negative ramifications. So which way does the arrow go on a furnace filter? Which side is the right side?

Continue reading to discover how to properly replace your system’s air filter!

Finding Air Flow Direction

Most forced air systems consistently recirculate air through the home to regulate its internal temperature and create a livable, comfortable space.

The system pushes heated or cooled air through the vents and pulls spent air to filter it once more, initiating a new cycle. As air flows from your ducts, it travels through the air filter and into your furnace.

Correct Arrow Positioning

Start by standing in front of your furnace with the new component when installing a new filter and determining the arrow’s direction. You want to locate an image on the border of your new filter that indicates the airflow direction.

This small graphic should always face toward the inside of the furnace compartment, away from the return duct. If replacing a filter that goes inside ductwork, the arrow should point toward the air handler.

Why It Matters

It’s a minor detail that you can easily overlook; however, proper filter installation affects your HVAC system.

Homes can heat and cool faster with adequate air flow; once the air flow becomes compromised, it can slow down your HVAC’s conditioning speed, prompting it to work harder and increasing energy costs.

While replacing air filters seems like a relatively straightforward task, it helps to know those minor details that can facilitate the replacement process. Specifically, knowing which way the arrow goes on a furnace filter can help promote airflow within your home, keeping air cleaner while mitigating overwhelming energy costs.
